Pedal-Powered Cinema on the Common
London's first pedal-powered open-air cinema of the year. The audience turns the cranks, the projector turns on, and a Friday night on Tooting Bec Common turns into something special.
The audience powers the projector and sound system using cycle generators built by Transition IG3. Take a 15-minute shift on the bikes, then sit back with a blanket, some popcorn, and your neighbours.
"It's the only cinema where the louder you cheer, the harder someone has to pedal." — Transition Tooting volunteer
Tonight's film
Voted on the night by the audience — a choice between Incredibles 2 (family-friendly) or Pride (community spirit). Both are crowd-pleasers; you can't really go wrong.
What's happening on the night
- Pedal rota — sign up for a 15-minute shift on the bikes (free drink included)
- Popcorn mending station — repair a garment while the popcorn pops
- Solar-powered phone charging — bring your dead battery
What to bring
- A blanket or low chair
- A picnic — and something to share if you're feeling generous
- Any clothes you've been meaning to fix (we'll have a needle and thread)
- Warm layers — it gets cool on the common after dark
Contact Transition Tooting by 1 June if you'd like to help run a pedal shift.
